The former governor of Edo state and the current APC's national chairman scored a first in the history of Nigeria’s politics by allowing the direct primaries option in some states of the federation.
Direct primaries give all members of the party a say in who emerges the flag-bearers of the party in various elective positions. Oshiomhole's stance paved the way for candidates who were not foisted by god-fathers.
Although, this has almost cost him his job as there were rumours of those affected by his decision to remove him from office, the diminutive former labour leader has remained firm in his commitment to the ideals of the ruling APC.
Oshiomhole’s insistence on the initiative may have affected his relationship with powerful chieftains of the party. It has, however, endeared him to political stakeholders in the country who have been rooting for the adoption of acceptable democratic tenets within Nigeria’s political parties.
